Should Christians Care About The Increasing Income Inequality In The U.S.? There is a story in the bible of a rich young man who asks Jesus what it takes to have eternal life. Jesus begins by telling the rich young man to obey all the commandments. The rich young man claims he has already done so and asks what else he needs to do. Jesus answers the rich young man, saying, â€Å"If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give it to the poor. Then come follow me.† (Matthew 19:16-30, Mark 10:17-31, and Luke 18:18-30) This encounter is the only recorded account of Jesus being asked, specifically and directly, what it takes to have eternal life. Jesus teaches that when his followers ignore the poor and marginalized, they ignore Jesus†¦show more content†¦Today, half of all Americans are considered poor or low-income. Christians have earned a reputation for many things as it pertains to social issues. Some Christians reject equal rights for homosexuals because, in their interpretation, the Bible casts homosexuality as an abomination. Some Christians across the south burn textbooks that include evolution because it does not align with their reading of the creation story in Genesis. Some extreme Christians even bomb abortion clinics in protest because abortion is an attack on the sanctity of life. But where are the Christians holding ‘Judge Not Lest You Be Judged’ (Matthew 7:1) signs? If some Christians claim to take the Genesis creation story so seriously, why have they not turned into environmentalists who take serious the first commandment: to take care of the earth? And if some Christians are so concerned about the sanctity of human life, what are they advocating to ensure the sanctity of life after a child is born? There are over two thousands verses in the Bible that deal with the issue of the poor.
